Job Summary

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking an Instructor, Early Childhood Development for Las Positas College in Livermore, California.

Representative Duties

1. Knowledge of and commitment to community college teaching and Career and Technical Education preparation.

2. Practice multiple, active instructional pedagogies to address all student learning styles.

3. Knowledge of career ladders and expectations for early childhood teachers in California.

4. Ability to work with community groups and campus organizations.

5. Ability to meet the needs of community college learners with diverse backgrounds and a wide range of skills and goals.

6. Experience mentoring students or teachers to support work-based competencies.

7. Experience administering early childhood programs.

8. Experience with program and curriculum development, online course development and instruction, and assessment of student learning outcomes.

9. Demonstrated ability to use instructional technology in the management of online and face to face courses.

10. Familiarity with PITC, the CA Learning Foundations and Curriculum Frameworks, California Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP) and other assessment tools used in the early childhood field.

11. Evidence of a strong commitment to emergent, culturally responsive, play-based curriculum approaches.

12. Advocacy in the field of early childhood education, and active participation in local and/or statewide child development communities.

13. Evidence of a strong commitment to remaining current in the early childhood education and child development field.

14. Effective oral, written communication and interpersonal skills.

15. Proven ability to teach varied courses in Early Childhood Development (ECD) including, but not limited to Principles and Practices, Child Development, Child Family and Community, Curriculum, Student Teaching (Practicum) and Administration.

16. Flexibility to teach early morning, late afternoon, evening, weekend, distance learning, and/or off-campus classes when scheduled as part of the regular teaching assignment.

17. Participation in campus professional activities, which include, but are not limited to, development of curriculum and new instructional approaches, discipline and college-wide committee membership, articulation, department staff meetings, community outreach and recruitment.

18. Work collaboratively with ECD faculty and staff.

19. Work collaboratively with the Director and teachers in the Child Development Center.

20. Participate in state and local quality improvement activities as needed.

21. Evidence of a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities, and a proven ability to effectively teach a diverse population of Community College students.

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education, or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education OR bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND master’s degree in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies, or family and consumer studies OR the equivalent.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Three years teaching experience in an early childhood setting (children ages 0 – 5).

2. Evidence of strong academic preparation in early childhood education/child development, human growth and development focused on years 0 – 8 as evidenced by upper division and/or graduate-level coursework or certifications.

3. Proficiency in Spanish desirable.

4. College teaching experience, particularly at the community college level.

Job Work Schedule

This position is full-time, tenure-track, 2017-2018 Academic Year. Employment will begin on or about August 14, 2017.
