Job Summary

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking an Instructor, Biology (Emphasis in Zoology and Cell/Molecular Biology) for Las Positas College in Livermore, California.

Representative Duties

1. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate majors Biology, including lectures and laboratories, with an emphasis in introductory cell and molecular biology, zoology, and evolution; primary assignment in General Zoology (Biology 1B) and Cell and Molecular Biology (Biology 1C).

2. Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate-level cell and molecular biology, zoology, and evolution enthusiastically and effectively to a variety of students.

3. Ability to design and implement innovative teaching methodologies in the above-mentioned fields, including laboratories and fieldwork.

4. Demonstrated knowledge of current laboratory techniques and computer-based instruction.

5. Ability to contribute significantly to maintenance and continued development of a state-of-the art science building, potentially including molecular, computational, and synthetic biology areas.

6. Commitment to working successfully as a team with science instructors, laboratory technicians, and other colleagues.

7. Ability to effectively integrate use of biology facilities (e.g. aquarium, student learning centers) and equipment into the Biology program

8. Demonstrated ability to develop partnerships with the local community (e.g. industry, government agencies or facilities, museums, or non-profit organizations)

9. Ability to contribute to the total operation of the Department, Division, and College

10. Commitment to working with other Biology and STEM faculty and staff to increase support and success for students in the STEM courses and pathways.

11. Ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and a variety of teaching modalities, including distance learning.

12. Participate in campus professional activities, which include, but are not limited to: committee membership, curriculum development, staff meetings, and community outreach.

13. Ability to teach late afternoon, evening, weekend, distance learning, and/or off campus

14. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.

Minimum Education and Experience

Education and Experience: Master’s in any biological science; OR Bachelor’s in any biological science AND Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science; OR the equivalent.

Minimum Qualifications

Evidence of a sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Teaching experience in Biology at the college level, with an emphasis in cell and molecular biology, zoology, and evolutionary biology.

2. Expertise in zoology, cell, and/or molecular biology. This may include areas such as phylogenetics, evolutionary biology, genomics, and/or synthetic biology.

Job Work Schedule

This position is full-time, tenure-track, 2017-2018 Academic Year. Employment will begin on or about August 14, 2017.
